TIME TO
ASCENT
PROBLEM
Okay. I signed up for a gym.
Now what?
Starting a healthy fitness lifestyle is as simple as signing up for a gym membership.
But, maintaining is a challenge as half of Americans suffer from 'gym-timidation'.
Gym-timidation, also known as gym anxiety, is caused by different reason like
I don't know...
how to use this machine or equipment
what is the correct form so I don't injure myself
how many sets and reps do I need to do
why I am not seeing an improvement
if people are judging me because I am doing something wrong
...and so on.
This discourage people that eventually leads them to quit within 6 months.
RESEARCH
I conducted in-person interviews with people at my local gym to have a better understanding of the target audience's goals and pain points. I then compiled the data to create a user persona representing the fitness user base.
USER PERSONAS
Goal
Sophia wants to easily identify and follow the most popular fitness routine validated by the mass group. Sophia also wishes for a video instruction of the correct form for the equipment or workout.
Pain Point
• Difficulty in searching for a fitness routine that fits her preferences
• Uncertain about how to use the equipment or work out properly

Sophia, a 22 years old recent graduate with zero knowledge in fitness
"I want to get my summer body, but I don't know where to start"
Pain Point
• Repetitive workout routine quickly fatigues his mental strength
• No instant visualization of reward for doing physical activity
Goal
John wants to diversify his workout routine to maintain the stimulus. John also wishes there were incentives for effort toward his fitness journey.

John, a 36 years old engineer with another same resolution 'new year = new me'
"I want to stay motivated, but working out feels repetitive and non-rewarding"

Video Instruction
I studied the top fitness apps used by our users and analyzed their services and experiences. I noticed that each fitness application offers a unique experience to help users achieve their fitness goals, and by studying this, I can identify ways to improve our app's experience.
IDEATE

By carefully assessing the goal and pain point of our target user, I was able to compile a comprehensive list of potential solutions. I categorized and prioritized solutions based on their similarities, handpicking the most commonly used content for the home page to ensure a user-friendly experience.
VERSION 1

CONCLUSION
In developing this project, my design approach focused on reducing 'gym-timidation'.
Some of the solutions were...
personalized fitness routines
bite-sized goal and accomplishment
detailed exercise instructions
comparison between users with similar motivation
and supportive community engagement.
By utilizing user personas and conducting competitive analysis, I structured the experience to address specific pain points, including motivation and clarity in form.
A/B testing and iterative feedback guided my design decisions to enhance usability, particularly for tracking and visualizing progress.
To further improve my work, I plan to enhance accessibility and incorporate adaptive personalization, making the experience more seamless and inclusive for all users in future projects.

The initial workout screen shows multiple statistics on one page, necessitating lengthy scrolling experiences. Some users proposed separate pages for each statistic to minimize scrolling and allow for extra information without clutter.
INITIAL FEEDBACK

The initial progress bar was designed in a circular shape to mimic natural finger movements. However, people were struggling with the experience and suggested a linear design, which is more commonly used in the industry.
